Life and death are in the power of the tongue.
Proverbs 18: 21.
The word POWER struck me in the verse above.
… Power means ability, capacity, potential, competence, control, mastery, rule, supremacy, hold, authority, strength, might … According to the Oxford dictionary of English.
This very “small” part of the body has the ability to cause death or life.
I pondered about this verse of the bible and realized how true it is.
I realized that every war whether at home, school, work or
nation started with the ‘tongue’ (words)
Every peace treaty was also initiated by the tongue (words)
So, the problem of the world isn’t guns, bows or swords but the use of the tongue to inflict death. These weapons are useless without being handled by man ( us); the possessor of the tongue.
Hence, I feel justified to state that the tongue is a weapon of mass destruction.
…this is the dark side of the tongue but there is also the positive side to the tongue; LIFE.
This same tongue that has the ability to kill can also bring vitality, high spirits, joy, peace. It can bring things to existence. It can give life.
When life and death are set before you which would you choose?
I’m sure most of us would choose life. If life is in power of the tongue, it means that we must master the ability to choose life as the tongue also possesses death.
To think that choosing life is a walk in the park is folly.
Choosing life requires a great deal of self-control which will come by desiring life and receiving help from the Holy Spirit.
Help to know and do the will of God concerning how to use the tongue to give life. Our manual for life will guide us on this journey. Luke 6: 45 states:
“ A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart,
and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart.
FOR THE MOUTH SPEAKS WHAT THE HEART IS FULL OF”
This verse is in sync with the Latin legal maxim “Nemo dat quod non habet “ which literally means “ no one gives what he doesn’t have”
For us to be able to give life, we must be full of life. We must have life.
Hence, do not let unwholesome words be spoken to you but
only that which is helpful for building you according to your needs
that it might benefit you as you listen
– Ephesians 4: 29.
Basically, we should guard our ears with all diligence and surround ourselves with people who speak life into us. We should read and listen to inspirational books and messages and we should watch movies that edify, in order that we may be able to bring forth LIFE.
